Take action to protect wildlife from being harmed by the border wall

Wildlife along our southern border are in serious trouble – please add your name to protect these animals from reckless and destructive border wall construction!

Hundreds of miles of some of our nation’s most sensitive habitat, including national wildlife refuges, monuments and forests, have been devastated by the construction of the border wall. This unnecessary project threatens the survival of the region’s wildlife, including imperiled species like ocelots, jaguars and Mexican gray wolves.

We need to take urgent action to restore habitat and mobility for wildlife. It’s time to undo the previous administration’s damage to these ecologically sensitive lands, for animals and human communities along the border!

Defenders of Wildlife

Dear Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Department of Homeland Security:

As a Defender of Wildlife, I urge you to end all border wall construction and remove existing segments that obstruct the natural movement of North American wildlife.
 
On January 20, 2021, President Biden issued a proclamation that paused construction and directed a careful review of all resources appropriated or redirected to construct a southern border wall. 
 
I'm asking you now to support a number of urgently needed measures on behalf of human and wildlife communities along the Southern border, in particular:
 
- Immediately cancel all border wall contracts and divert remaining funds to other purposes, including removing harmful wall sections and mitigating damage caused by the wall and related infrastructure;
- Take immediate action to restore fragile and ecologically sensitive areas that have been harmed by wall construction;
- Remove wall segments that harm or threaten to harm people, communities, wildlife and/or the land, and remediate damages. If deemed necessary, replace with vehicle barriers;
- Move towards responsible, humane border management, and promote unity and harmony between Mexico and the United States;
- Restore equal protection under the law to the borderlands by vacating waivers of law invoked under the REAL ID waiver authority.
 
Most Americans oppose the imposition of walls along the U.S.-Mexico border. Border walls and border wall construction cause immense harm to wildlife, private and public lands, and livelihoods of the people who live, work and recreate here. The devastation spans hundreds of miles of the borderlands region, one that is culturally and biologically diverse, includes vibrant communities, beautiful landscapes and rivers, and many threatened and endangered species including the jaguar, Mexican wolf and ocelot.
 
According to the Washington Post, ending construction of the border wall would mean a net savings of $2.6 billion for the U.S. Treasury.
 
Please work with border communities, Native American Tribes, NGOs and elected officials to restore wildlife habitat connectivity and restore equal protection under the law to our human and wildlife communities.
